See how rowing helped Jonathan overcome incredible challenges, find freedom on the water, & chart a course toward a brighter future.

Jonathan Colon-Dominguez’s story is one of resilience, transformation, and the power of opportunity. A recent immigrant from the Dominican Republic, Jonathan arrived in the United States just a few years ago, bringing with him a determination to succeed despite facing significant challenges.

Navigating school as a neurodivergent student whose first language is not English was no easy task. Jonathan struggled to find his place and keep up academically. But when he joined his school's crew team, everything began to change. Rowing became more than just a sport for Jonathan—it was an outlet, a source of stability, and a springboard for a brighter future.

Jonathan recalls a moment on the way to practice when he said, “I feel so free when I get to practice.” That freedom extended beyond the water; it became the driving force for a newfound confidence in himself and his abilities.

Before rowing, Jonathan’s prospects seemed limited to working in a warehouse with his father, moving pallets to help support his family. Today, thanks to the opportunities and mentorship provided through rowing, Jonathan is on a path to becoming a construction engineer, attending college, and preparing to join the Marines. His success story embodies the mission of Hope on Water: providing access to rowing for those who might not otherwise have the means, unlocking doors to a world of possibilities.

For Jonathan, the cost-free access to rowing was a lifeline. Without it, this journey might not have been possible. As he prepares for the next chapter of his life, Jonathan’s story stands as a testament to the transformative power of opportunity, community, and the belief that no dream is too big with the right support.
